Symposium on Hindi language teaching in Vietnam

The study of India and teaching of the Hindi language in Vietnam were the focus at a symposium held in Ho Chi Minh City on March 25 to mark the World Hindi Day 2009.

At the symposium, entitled “Hindi in Vietnam”, Indian Consul General in HCM City Jitendra Nath Misra said that the language is being taught in many localities in Vietnam, including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and southern Binh Duong, Dong Nai and Tien Giang provinces.

Dr Le Tay, Head of the India Study Department of the HCM City University of Social Sciences and Humanities (HUSSH), said the HUSSH was the first university to teach Hindi in Vietnam.

However, many students complained of a lack of study materials and few occasions to practise the language, mainly at events and festivals of the Indian community living in Vietnam.
